Foster Homes Save Lives

What is a Foster Home?
It's a family that opens their home to a dog or cat in need. Foster families treat the animal like one of their own. Then they can give input on the needs of that animal and help find the perfect forever home for him or her.

How does becoming a foster home save lives?
Quite simply, the more spots there are, the more dogs and cats that can be placed. Each rescue only has so much room. So every extra spot is vital. Lately, we have heard of many rescues that are so full they have had to turn down animals.

Is the foster home financially responsible for the foster animal?
In most cases the rescue will pay for all pre-approved medical bills. The foster home pays for food. There are exceptions to this, and we encourage you to ask each group you are interested in fostering for.

I want to foster, but now they are doing home checks and background checks? What's going on?
Don't take it personally! Rescues work hard to make sure their animals go into homes (even temporary foster homes) that not only want to help, but are able to. Not every environment is appropriate for every animal. Even members of the Trainers Academy staff have gone through these checks, and are happy to do so. In the end it is in the best interest of the animal.

Is it hard to let go of a foster animal, once they find their forever home?
It is often bittersweet. But when you see that perfect fit between an animal and their adopter, you feel a great sense of satisfaction knowing you were instrumental in creating that bond! And there is always another animal in need that you can foster.

What if I want to adopt my foster?
Each group has different policies about adopting foster dogs. Be sure to ask the rescues you are working with about theirs.

If you think you might want to foster you can visit our links pages to find local foster always in need of foster homes, or e-mail us at trainersacademy@aol.com. If you would prefer to foster a specific breed, let us know. Almost every breed has a rescue and we would be happy to help you locate one.
