Clicker FAQ

Clicker training is the most humane and effective method used in dog training. We talk to people everyday who have never heard of it and are hesitant to try it, so here we'll take some time to teach you about clicker training, address some common concerns, and answer some frequently asked questions.

  • If my pup/dog needs medication, can you give it to him/her?"
Yes, provide us with the medication and clear instructions and we'll be happy to do that for you.
  • What are your Day Care hours?
6:30am to 6:30pm Monday through Friday.
  • How do I register for Day Care?
    Give us a call
  • My dog has been dismissed from another daycare place. Will you accept him/her in your program?
We get these calls a lot, so you're not alone! We'll need to speak to your directly to get the specifics, but most dogs can socialize properly when paired with the correct dog/s for his or her play style. Properly assessing your dogs social skills -- or limitations makes all the difference.
  • What is the cost for Day Care?
The cost is $32.00 per day. We also offer visit packages, that reduce the daily rate. Please see above for package details.
  • What will my dog's day at Day Care be like?
We believe that a balance of play and rest are important to your dogs physical and behavioral health! Play times last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour each, and are followed by crate/down time for water and a nap! Then it's out for potty and another play group! The cycle repeats a minimum 4 times per day-sometimes 5 times. Play groups start at 8:30 and rotate as outlined above, until 4pm.
  • Who will my dog play with?
Play groups are organized by a dog's play style and comfort level/social history to start. From there, close monitoring and updates in your dogs play groups are made as appropriate. We determine which dog(s) he/she will meet first, by the information we gather from you when you call to register.
  • What vaccines does my dog need for Day Care?
For pups *under 6 months of age we require veterinary record of; a minimum of 2 distemper series vaccines, bordetella, and a fecal check current within the past 90 days. For dogs *6 months of age and older we require veterinary record of; current distemper series, bordetella, rabies, and a fecal check that is current within the past 90 days.
  • How old does my puppy need to be to attend your Day Care?
Pups can start as soon as they've had a minimum of 2 distemper series vaccines, bordetella, and a fecal check - this may be as early as 8-10 weeks.
  • Is it more effective than traditional methods?
Clicker training provides a positive reinforcement approach to training that is effective, and fun for both you and your dog! A more "traditional" approach involves the use of equipment such as choke, pinch, prong, and shock collars in an attempt to train the dog to engage in behavior - or to avoid behavior - to prevent a painful consequence. Traditional approaches often lead to new or worsening behavioral problems. Clicker training is not only amazingly effective, it's completely safe and fun for both ends of the leash!
  • Will my dog confuse other sounds (like the clicking of a keyboard, or other environmental noises) with the clicker sound?"
Dogs are VERY good discriminators and will easily differentiate between the sound of the clicker, and other sounds.
  • Do I have to carry the clicker around for the rest of my dog's life?
This is the biggest misconception about clicker training and we hear it a lot! The clicker is used to teach and strengthen new behaviors. Once a behavior is learned and put on cue, you'll click for that behavior less often, and eventually not at all. Once your dog is clicker trained, they'll never forget it, so you'll have a tool to use to teach new behaviors (or refresh already-learned behaviors!) for the rest of your dogs life!!
  • Why use a clicker? Can't I just use food by itself to reward my dog?
Reinforcement strengthens behavior, but the timing of reinforcement will determine which behavior the dog will choose to repeat! If reinforcement (i.e. a food reward) does not occur as the dog is actually engaged in the target behavior, h/she will not make the connection between the two events. The clicker provides a 'bridge' - sometimes called a 'behavior marker' - between the behavior and the reward for that behavior (as predicted by the click!) which helps the dog make the connection clearly and immediately. They'll learn to repeat behaviors that make the click happen because the click means a treat/reward is coming, creating a fast and effective learning experience for you and your dog. Unless you have the food treat delivered to your dog consistently as the target behavior is happening - which is impossible for most people - you'll need some way to bridge the behavior and the consequence...this is why the clicker is so effective!!
  • How does it work and how does it help my dog learn to do what I want?
Clicker training works on 2 primary learning principles: Classical (making associations) and operant (behavior = consequence). First, the sound of the clicker is followed immediately and repetitiously with food (click/treat, click/treat, click/treat). This process teaches the dog that the sound of the clicker is significant, and he learns to predict the delivery of a treat when he hears it. From there, the click sound (because it now predicts the delivery of food!) will serve to positively reinforce behavior and teach your dog to repeat the behavior/s which make the click happen!
  • What is clicker training?
It's a positive reinforcement-based training method that teaches the dog to repeat behavior/s that make the click happen! The clicker is a training tool that teaches new behavior quickly and effectively, and is a lot of fun for both dog and human! It's simply never, ever necessary to use force, fear, or intimidation in training. Clicker training enhances the bond between you and your dog as you enjoy the training process together!
  • Can I use my voice instead of a clicker?
You could, but there are a couple of reasons the clicker is more effective than a verbal marker. First, verbal markers (words like, "yes!" or "good!") are commonly used in everyday conversations which can effect their significance to the dog and dampen their effectiveness overall. Second, the word is not likely to sound the same consistently - and even subtle changes in intonation may confuse the dog. The clicker's very distinct and consistent sound makes it easier for the dog.
  • Is clicker training hard to learn?
No! It's very simple, and our students agree! All you have to do is develop your timing skills, so you're clicking for behavior you like as it occurs! Timing is critical in dog training, regardless of the method. Clicker students find timing their click properly far easier - and a lot more pleasant! - than trying to properly time punishments or 'corrections' for unwanted behavior!!
  • Isn't it confusing to my dog to have multiple students in class clicking at the same time?
You would be surprised how fast dogs learn which click belongs to them!! The "connection" between you and your dog builds quickly and s/he'll realize in no time that the click came from you for his/her behavior!

  • What happens if I miss a class?
We want you and your dog to get as much as you can out of your experience with us, so if you have to miss class during your session, we'll be happy to help you schedule to attend a make up for a missed Puppy or Intermediate class. For puppy class make ups, please call us for dates and times available for the week/s that you missed. In most cases, you will be able to attend your make up class with your puppy. For Intermediate class make ups, in most cases you'll be attending without your dog. Reason being that each class has a dynamic all it's own, and adding additional dog/s to an existing Intermediate class environment can be challenging and disruptive for all, including your dog. Students who have attended Intermediate make up sessions without their dogs, have consistently commented that it was helpful to be there to observe and learn without being distracted by their own dog! Specialty classes such as Advanced and Greyhounds Only, do not have a make up class option. Regardless of the class you're in, if you miss a week, you will still receive your weekly Training Guide so you can stay current with the lessons! Please give us a call to schedule your make up session, and please let us know if you have any questions.
  • I've already started attending my class, but I realize that I have to miss a session or more of it now, can I transfer to another class?"
We do not offer transfers options for this scenario, but you will continue to receive your emailed training guides each week as usual, so you can stay current with the lessons. Additionally, we suggest that you schedule and attend make up sessions for the week/s you've missed.
  • Is class right for my dog?
Is your dog shy? Does he bark at dogs or people? If you're not sure class is right for your dog, read this.
  • What does Intermediate Class cover?
Intermediate class runs for 6 consecutive weeks, meets once per week for 90 minutes, and is a comprehensive step-by-step training program designed to teach you how to teach your dog to choose behaviors you want him to repeat. You will gain an understanding of how your dog learns, and how to best teach him using a positive reinforcement approach. Throughout the course, we'll provide guidance and support to help you learn the skills to transform your dogs behavior. Here's a glimpse of what you can look forward to our Intermediate Class: * Clicker training - learn how to teach behaviors such as coming when called, stay, leave it, and controlled/loose leash walking and more! * Problem solving Q&A - how and why it's important to prevent unwanted behavior as the first step to changing it * Reactivity prevention - teaching your dog to connect with you, and choose calm behavior, even in an exciting environment

Yes! But we usually recommend that dogs living in the same household come to separate classes. If you have more than one dog, please give us a call to discuss further.
  • I took a puppy class somewhere else, and s/he's only 5 months old, can I take your intermediate class?"
Yes, in most cases. Intermediate class is open to dogs 5 1/2 months of age or older - or to pups who've graduated from our puppy class who may be younger. If you're successfully past the common "puppy problems" (i.e., house training, excessive mouthing, etc.) then intermediate class is probably right for you. Please contact us, we'll be happy to answer questions!

Yes!! You'll learn about the clicker and how to use it properly in class!
  • Can my kids come with me and our dog to intermediate class?
Kids 13 years of age and older can accompany their parent/s with the dog to intermediate class. Kids 13 years or older can also handle the dog on the floor during class as long as our Handlers Waiver has been completed and signed by parent/guardian, who must attend each week's class with their child.
  • Is my dog too old for class?
NO!! We've had "senior" aged dogs through our classes, they're never too old to learn!
  • Can my kids come with me and our dog to advanced class?
Kids 13 years of age and older can accompany their parent/s with the dog to advanced class. Kids 13 years or older can also handle the dog on the floor during class as long as our Handlers Waiver has been completed and signed by parent/guardian, who must attend each week's class with their child.
  • Do you offer an advanced class?
To add a new question go to app settings and press "Manage Questions" button. The Advanced class will help you take your dogs' training to the next level in reliability. Your understanding of the techniques of luring, shaping, and capturing to train behavior will grow as you teach your dog new skills - and continue to perfect many of the behaviors you began working on during Intermediate class, like loose leash walking, stays, and recalls! New behaviors such as a foundational nose work game called "find it" (where your dog will use his sense of smell to locate treats hidden in the building), will be introduced. You can also look forward to fun training games in class too, designed to strengthen your dogs responses despite intense distractions, and much, much more... If you and your dog have graduated our Intermediate class, you're ready for Advanced class. Oh, and don't be intimidated by the word "Advanced"... you're not yet "advanced" when you start class - but you and your canine friend sure will be, by the time you graduate! Advanced class is also taught using the principles of positive reinforcement, and the clicker method.
  • What happens if I miss a class?
Our specialty classes do not allow for make ups. You will receive your weekly training guide per usual, so you can stay current. Our trainers are more than happy to help should you have questions on anything you missed.
  • I can't attend the class I've signed up for, can I get a refund?"
While we're happy to transfer you to the next available class, we do not offer refunds.
  • I haven't taken any of your classes with my dog, can I take your advanced class?"
No, completion of our Intermediate or Greyhound Only class is a pre-requisite for the Advanced class.
  • I live outside of your service area. Can you help me locate an experienced positive reinforcement training professional in my area?
Yes! See below for a list of organization websites with search features to help you find a qualified professional in your area. This list is comprised of organizations where membership guarantees the use of scientifically sound, positive reinforcement-based techniques: Truly Dog Friendly http://www.trulydogfriendly.com/blog/?page_id=2 The Pet Professional Guild http://www.petprofessionalguild.com/ The Association of Animal Behavior Professionals http://www.associationofanimalbehaviorprofessionals.com/ Karen Pryor Academy for Dog Trainers https://www.karenpryoracademy.com/find-a-trainer International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants https://iaabc.org Victoria Stilwell Positively Dog Training http://positively.com/
  • Do you offer a service where you'll take my pup or dog for a period of time and train him/her for me?
This type of service is usually referred to as "board and train" or "boot camp", and no, we do not. We do offer in-home training and behavior consultation services, to teach you how to teach your dog, but we do not take the dog from you, nor do we do the training for you. **We want to caution anyone considering sending their dog away for training, that we are NOT aware of any such services available in our area except places that use harsh methods e.g. prong/choke/shock collars. It is your responsibility to know exactly what your dog will endure in the name of training should you decide to have someone else do it for you -be sure you really know what's going to go on. It would be a good idea to keep in mind that if the promises made by someone who's going to train your dog for you sound "too good to be true" they probably are. Here's an article that outlines a few very good reasons you'd be wise to really think twice before you make the decision to send your dog away for someone else to train: http://ferndogtraining.com/why-sending-your-dog-away-for-training-doesnt-work/ If you are thinking about sending your dog away for training, please give us a call before you decide - there are much simpler and safer options to consider!
